The Executive Committee is pleased to invite members of all YPU clubs to our Annual Keighley Day event, which will take place at Carleton Community Centre, Carleton Road, Pontefract, WF8 3RJ. The event is dedicated to the memory of Alexander Keighley, a founder member of the YPU.
We are pleased to announce that our two speakers’ sessions will be presented by Bill Ward and Helen Williams, whose work and interests will be familiar to many. Examples of their work and photographic careers and projects are summarised below.

Bill Ward
Multi-award winning creative photographer and actor Bill Ward discusses photographing the wet stuff in all its glory. From waterfalls to seascapes, urban canals to mountain streams, Bill leaves no stone unturned in his quest to uncover the mysteries of H2O, and how we as photographers can help unlock its full potential. Expect a light sprinkling of handy tips and advice, as well as a bucketload of aqueous photographic delight.
Bill Ward is a multi-award winning photographer and actor. He won the inaugural Adobe Prize at the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year 2015, Best Seascape at Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020, and was runner up in the Your Vision category at Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2021. He gives talks at Festivals, Shows, and Camera Clubs all over the world, and is a judge for UK Landscape Photographer of the Year. He is an Ambassador for Pentax Ricoh UK, on the ProTeam for 3LeggedThing, a Tour/Workshop Leader for Light and Land, and shoots for the photographic agencies Robert Harding and ArenaPal.
As an actor, he has appeared in over 30 TV Shows and Films, and 50 Plays since turning professional in 2000. He is probably best known for playing the rather unpleasant builder Charlie Stubbs in the UK TV show Coronation Street for over 400 episodes, for which he won many awards. A creative photography specialist, as well as a landscape photographer, he is particularly drawn to water, and is a regular writer and contributor to the worldwide ICM Photography Magazine. He believes in improvising, meeting he landscape on its own terms, and going with what he’s given.
His photography is a response, and in many ways an antidote, to the time he spends as an actor working in the public eye.

Helen Williams
Helen has been a working photographer since 1995 when she started out as a press photographer for Ross Parry Press Agency covering all of Yorkshire’s news and sport. In 1999 she joined ITV as their in-house photographer providing their publicity stills for the tv programmes that they produced. She spent 8 years on set every day on the likes of Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Touch of Frost, non-scripted shows such as Countdown and also children’s programmes.
Fast forward to now and she has been working as a successful freelance stills photographer in television since she left ITV in 2007. Understanding the nuances of life on set has given her a deeper understanding of the importance of communication, lighting and how to condense scenes (which are given life with movement and script) into a still image. In the many talks she has done for camera clubs she has given a fascinating insight into how a tv set works and where and how photography fits in.
