David Garthwaite is a fine art photographer from Leeds who specialises in architectural, portrait, and product photography. His minimalist black and white style emerged from his upbringing in the industrial North of England – where he was drawn towards the bleaker and darker side of everyday locations.
David’s talk – ‘Fine Art: A workflow’ – will take us right through his editing process from RAW file to final image, walking us step by step towards the creation of a striking black and white image fine art image. His tutorial style covers key techniques and tools, explaining why they are being used, and the overall theory of how to produce such images.
David began his photographic journey in 2017, and was soon drawn to the high contrast style of Michael Kenna. Later he discovered the work of Joel Tjintjelaar, and an editing style that allowed for greater expression through the crafting of luminosity in a smooth and realistic way. More recently David has moved into portrait work – an area that offers him greater control over the different elements in a scene, and allows him to communicate a wider range of emotions.
